Using Namewise

Namewise is provided for informational and decision-support purposes. Name meanings, origins, popularity trends, similarity scores, Data Confidence and Name Characteristics are editorial or demonstration content unless explicitly marked as verified — see methodology. Nothing on Namewise constitutes legal, trademark, medical or professional advice.

Name Checker

Name Checker does not perform trademark clearance, and does not guarantee domain or social handle availability unless a result is explicitly marked "checked" against a live provider. Consult a qualified professional before committing to a business or brand name.

Shortlists and accounts

Local shortlists are stored in your browser only. Account-based features described on this site are not yet available.

Automated access, scraping, and data mining

Ordinary search-engine indexing (when Namewise is publicly launched and indexing is enabled — see methodology and data sources) is permitted. Beyond that, without our prior written permission, you may not:

  • systematically scrape, crawl, or harvest content from Namewise using automated tools;
  • reproduce a substantial part of the Namewise database, or repeatedly extract and reassemble insubstantial parts in a systematic way that amounts to reproducing a substantial part;
  • republish Namewise editorial profiles, or use them to create or improve a competing name database or dataset;
  • circumvent, or attempt to circumvent, any technical measure Namewise uses to control or limit automated access;
  • send a volume or pattern of requests that overloads or degrades the service for other users;
  • misrepresent Namewise content as your own, or remove attribution, source, or rights notices from it.

You may quote a limited excerpt of Namewise editorial content for ordinary personal, non-commercial use, or link to any page, provided the source is credited. We do not claim ownership of underlying facts, official statistics, public-domain material, or third-party source material we cite — see data sources for how we credit and license each source. What we do claim protection over, where applicable, is our own original editorial writing, the structure and arrangement of a profile, our source-tier taxonomy, our Data Confidence and Profile Completeness models, our relationship modelling between names, our source-selection and reconciliation work, our compilation of the database as a whole, and our software and site design.

We reserve the right to restrict, rate-limit, or block access that we reasonably believe is abusive, automated outside these terms, or a risk to service availability for other users.

AI training and text-and-data-mining policy

Namewise content may not be used for generative-model training, to build a retrieval-augmented-generation dataset, to create embeddings, or for any other text-and-data mining purpose — whether commercial or non-commercial — without our prior written permission. This applies regardless of whether the underlying jurisdiction provides a TDM exception, and constitutes our express reservation of rights against any such exception where one would otherwise apply. This restriction covers our original editorial writing, compiled database structure, and site content; it does not and cannot restrict use of the underlying facts, official statistics, or public-domain material a page may also contain — see data sources.

Licensing and reuse

For research, publishing, dataset, API, or other commercial-reuse enquiries — including any use beyond the personal, non-commercial quotation permitted above — contact us at hello@namewise.app — see contact. We do not currently offer a public API; if one exists in the future, access terms would be published separately rather than implied here. No licence is granted by omission — if a use isn't clearly covered above as personal, non-commercial use, assume it requires our written permission and ask first.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. This section, like the rest of this page, is an early draft pending review by qualified legal counsel — nothing here should be treated as finalised legal advice.
